What's New In Galway City Partnership:

Launch of New Employment Support DVD:

Galway City Partnership were delighted with the turnout for the first public screening of a new employment DVD and accompanying booklets, which the Mayor of Galway City, Niall Ò Brolchàin launched on Friday, 29th September 2006 in the Galway Peoples’ Resource Centre.

Margaret Cullinane Asst Manager Galway Peoples’ Resource Centre with the Mayor of Galway City, Niall O’Brolchain and Charlie Currie from Galway City Partnership at the launch of the DVD

The DVD and booklets entitled, ‘Got A New Job? Or Hired A New Worker?’ offers support for those starting a new job as well as providing tips for employers taking on additional staff.

The DVD has been also been designed to enable people with impaired vision or with hearing difficulties to benefit from the information in both the DVD and booklets. The DVD and accompanying booklets tells the story of ordinary people, many of whom, have recently started a new job and their particular experiences associated with that process. An
employer perspective is also included – their expectations of new employees and the recognition that everyone needs time to adjust and fit into a new environment.

Agencies and organisations such as Congress Centres have been rather good at providing educational options, training supports and work experience to people prior to taking up mainstream employment. They assist people in preparing for work by means of the Jobs Club, Community Employment, Jobs Initiative or through the Local Employment Service Network. These all provide excellent ways in which many people can become job ready.

Where we all have tended to do less well is in the period between an individual accepting a job offer and first few weeks of employment. It’s still surprising to find that many employers go to great lengths and a considerable amount of financial expense to advertise jobs, conduct interviews and so on to select the best candidate. Yet too few have procedures in place to ensure that the successful job applicant can look forward to begin employment in a confident mood and with a real sense of purpose. This oversight all too often can lead to feelings of dread and anxiety, which are hardly conducive with making a positive contribution to an individual’s first morning at work.

The DVD and accompanying booklets are intended to help a new employee maintain a positive outlook in what is for them an alien environment, but it also makes a number of suggestions which employers can introduce into the workplace to make it a much more welcoming experience for all involved.

Even though the filming of the DVD shows people in an office setting the tips and hints can apply equally to all workers and employers. So whether you intend to become an assembly line operative, seek work in the community, or aspire to be a politician, then the information contained in the DVD and booklets will have something to offer most people.

For further details on the DVD please contact GCP at (091) 773466 and ask to speak to someone in the Services to the Unemployed section.

Junior Cert. Disco 2007:

In September of this year, the third Junior Cert Disco took place in Leisureland The initiative was developed Galway.

Representatives from Foroige and HSE and Galway City Partnership met to discuss the initiative which was developed 3 years ago. The disco was organised with vital support from local schools, local Gardai, Galway City and City of Galway VEC.

The disco proved to be a great success with over 700 young people attending the disco. Young people who presented with alcohol were refused entry to the event and their parents were contacted to come to the venue and collect the young people. 10 young people were refused entry and parents were contacted. Parents were also contacted if the young people left the disco early however very few left early.

Following the event very positive feedback was received from all concerned. Young people and parents contacted members of the committee to comment on how well the event was run and how enjoyable it was for students. Reports from the Gardai were very positive with a major reduction of incidents and A+E admissions compared with previous years. The event also received great recognition from local media.

The success of this initiative was due to a number of factors. Firstly, the fact that there were so many different agencies involved in the planning, organising and sponsoring of this event. The system where students had to complete an application form proved to be a contributory factor. This form included a passport photograph and contact details for their parents and was also stamped by the school. The disco was thoroughly supervised by volunteers from different youth and family support agencies throughout the city. Success was also due to the co-operation from parents and young people attending the celebration.

The night produced a ‘sense of community’ among young people in Galway. This night provided an opportunity for them to enjoy each other’s company regardless of background or results. Pride in the behaviour (and the achievement) of the young people who attended the event was unmistakable among the Organising Committee, Volunteers and Parents.
